Accessing the Census
When will data become available in AnySite Australia?
Pitney Bowes Software will be making the data available to our clients in a schedule that aligns to the ABS’s three releases. Two updates to software products, such as AnySite Australia, will occur in 2012, with a third update occurring in early 2013.
More specific release dates will follow in May, 2012. For further information, please Contact Us.
Using 2011 Census Data and Geographies
How do I move from the old 2006 geographies, such as Collection Districts, to the new 2011 geographies?
Since the geographic boundary files for most of the new ASGS are already available, users can begin making the transition to these boundaries today.
If your business data is address-based, geocoding simplifies this process. If using region-based data, however, correspondences may instead be utilised in some instances.
For further information on this topic, please Contact Us or your Pitney Bowes Software representative.
What if I have custom regions, such as sales territories, PMAs, franchise boundaries, etc. that are based on 2006 geographies such as Collection Districts?
Please see the answer to the above question.
I use postcodes for reporting. How will this affect me?
If using postcodes, the overhead in transitioning to the new 2011 Census data should be minimal. Rather than using 2006 Collection Districts as your lowest ‘building block’ unit, you can instead switch to using 2011 SA1s.
It is important to note, however, that postcode definitions and boundaries regularly change. In the last year, for instance, nearly a hundred postcodes have been changed by Australia Post and PSMA.

When will the data be released?
Census data will be released by the ABS in three phases beginning at the end of June.
For specific dates and variables, view the Census Data Release Schedule page.
Geographies and data variables
What demographics will be available for Mesh Blocks?
Only population and dwelling counts, in addition to the Land Use indicator.
View the Mesh Block (MB) - Overview page for further information.
Will 2011 data be available for 2006 Collection Districts?
No. SA1s will replace Collection Districts.
View the Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) – Overview page for further information.
Will 2011 data be available for other 2006 ASGC regions?
Yes, for all regions other than Collection Districts.
What will happen to Collection Districts?
Collection Districts will be replaced by a new geographical unit, the Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1).
View the Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) – Overview page for further information.
What data won’t be provided for SA1s?
Due to potential privacy implications and data aggregation constraints, some data variables are not released to SA1s. These include:
- Indigenous Profile
- Time Series Profile
- Expanded Community Profile
The smallest geography for which these data will be released is the Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2).
View Page 24 of the Appendix: Products and Services, 2011 (pdf logo 266k) document from the ABS for a full overview of Census Data Profiles and Geographies.
How will the transition from SLA to SA2 be undertaken?
The ABS will be phasing out SLAs during 2012.
- 2011 Census data will be available for SLAs.
- Beyond 2012, no new (non-census) data will be available for SLAs from the ABS.
Concordances / Correspondences
Will an official concordance between SA1s and CDs be provided?
At this stage, no, not by the ABS. This is due to the significant structural differences between the two geographies.
View the Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) – Overview page for further information.
What concordances/correspondences will be provided?
A full list of correspondences is available from the ABS website at their ASGS Correspondences page.
